Personalized home organization
Entrepreneur, mom, & wife
Is it just me or does every year feel faster and faster? We’re already mid-way into January and I’m just catching my breath from Christmas. I’m sure you can relate! Happy belated new year to you and now onto one of my favorite topics: home organization!
What are your home organization priorities for 2025? Whether you’re looking to create more space, find a sense of calm, gain control over clutter, or enjoy being in your home more, the start of a new year is the perfect time to go for it.
As a professional organizer in Houston, TX, I’ve helped countless clients transform homes of all sizes into spaces that reflect their best selves— spaces where they can relax, unwind, and enjoy their daily lives. The process of organizing can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right mindset, products, and a structured approach, you can achieve your home organization goals in 2025 and beyond.
Before you dive in, take a moment to reflect on why you want to organize your home. This will help keep you motivated throughout the process and determine the best place to begin. Many clients want to organize their homes to:
Once you’ve identified your reasons, break them down into specific goals. For example, instead of a vague “organize my house,” aim for something more targeted like:
It only takes a minute or two to jot your reasons and your goals down, and it will really help get your project off the ground!
A major overhaul of your entire home may feel daunting. Break your larger goals into smaller, manageable projects. This way, you can make steady progress, and the results will feel more rewarding.
It’s a good idea to tackle one room at a time and start with the one that will have the biggest impact on your daily living or the one that is most top of mind. Once you select the space you want to focus on, follow these steps:
Start by removing anything you no longer need or use. This is often the hardest part of organizing, but it’s essential. Start with one category at a time—clothes, books, toys, kitchen gadgets, etc. Don’t try to do everything at once. Choose a category and tackle it, then move on to the next.
Tip: Use the Four-Box Method. Label four boxes: “Keep,” “Donate,” “Sell,” and “Trash.” As you go through each item, place it in one of these boxes. If you’re in a closet or pantry and haven’t used an item in the past year, it’s probably time to let it go.
Now that you’ve decluttered, think about how you would like your space to function. For example, you might want your kitchen to function as a cooking headquarters, a gathering space, and an eating area.
Tip: Before you start organizing, think about storage options. Do you have bins, shelves, or baskets that can help you keep things neat? If not, invest in organizational products that will fit your needs and complement your space.
To keep making progress despite hectic schedules and other more pressing demands, block 20 or 30 minutes a couple days a week to work on organizing. Listen to an audiobook or music while you organize so you feel like you’re escaping the day for a few minutes. When it comes to major areas, like the garage or basement, break them down further into subcategories like “tools,” “seasonal items,” and “sports equipment.”
A well-thought-out schedule can make your home organization journey feel less overwhelming. Consider the following approach when crafting your schedule:
Start with the room that needs the most attention or the one you would most benefit from organizing. For example, if your kitchen is the heart of the home and often feels disorganized, tackle that room first. You schedule could be:
Space these out in a way that your fits needs and calendar, whether you want to take on one room per month, break larger projects into smaller chunks, or power through it over a few weekends, create a plan and write it down.
Avoid overwhelming yourself with tight deadlines. Instead, aim for flexibility while still keeping a steady pace. At the end of each month, evaluate your progress and adjust accordingly.
Tip: Aim for 2-4 days per project, depending on the room’s complexity. For example, your garage may require more time than a guest bedroom.
In addition to organizing major rooms, create time in your schedule for ongoing tasks, such as managing mail, seasonal decor, and tidying up every few weeks. Keeping these tasks in mind will prevent small areas of clutter from accumulating over time.
Tip: If you’re pressed for time, consider scheduling just 10 minutes a day for smaller organizing tasks. Even 15 minutes can make a difference when it’s done consistently.
As you begin to organize your home, there are so many great tools and products that can help make the process easier. Here are a few I recommend:
These are must-haves for every room in the house. They help with categorizing and storing items neatly. Look for stackable bins with labels so you can easily see and access the contents.
Recommendation: The Container Store Clear Bins or the Weck Jars
Drawer dividers help transform a messy drawer into an organized space. Whether you’re organizing your desk drawer, kitchen utensil drawer, or bedroom dresser, dividers are incredibly useful.
Recommendation: The UTopia Drawer Dividers or SmartStore Drawer Organizers
Open shelving units are great for spaces where you want items accessible but still neatly stored. They help maximize vertical space and keep items visible.
Recommendations: IKEA Kallax Shelf Unit or HDX Wire Shelves
Transform your closet with hanging racks, shoe organizers, or under-bed storage bins to maximize your space and make it easier to find items.
Recommendation: Simple Housewares Shoe Rack or Hanging Organizer
Having a label maker will make it easier to stay organized long-term. Label everything from boxes to bins to files.
Recommendation: The Brother P-touch Label Maker
Once you’ve organized your home, keep it tidy with a few habits:
Your home organization goals are achievable with the right approach and mindset. By breaking down larger projects into smaller tasks, prioritizing your goals, and staying consistent with your schedule, you’ll create a home that reflects your ideal lifestyle—one that brings you more space, calm, control, and joy.
Remember: Home organization is an ongoing journey. Take it one step at a time, celebrate your progress, and enjoy the satisfaction that comes with having a well-organized home. Here’s to more organization, more space, and more joy in 2025!
