One of the heavily used spaces in your house is your closet. You get dressed everyday (hopefully) and probably want to do so quickly. Having an organized closet is the key to getting dressed quickly and still being able to look put together. After recently working on a closet, I used many of my tips to make sure this couple would be able to find everything they need quickly and get dressed without too much hassle.
When hanging up clothes, it seems like having the same hangers wouldn’t matter, but it does. They don’t need to be the same color always, but having the same type creates a seamless look for your clothes. That way, you’re not distracted by the hanger when picking out clothing to wear.
Another tip is organize by color. Also, may not seem like a big deal, but can help you find what you need quickly. If you’re looking for a specific item, you will know exactly where to look because you know what color it is. If not, you can choose a color that will coordinate with what you’ve already chosen. Even if you’re not sure what to wear, you can make a quick decision and move on with your day.
In this closet, you will notice all the hanging clothes have the velvet hangers, even though they’re not the same color. The hangers do not distract from the clothing and this couple can easily choose what to wear. Also, types of clothing are hanging by color – take his side for example. His polo shirts and short sleeves are by color, with button downs and long sleeves next. This way, he only needs to look in the section he will be wearing based off of a weekend outfit or going to the office.
When folding the clothing in the drawer, use file folding so you can see everything. The issue with traditional folding where everything is stacked is you can only see what is on top. So, you either only wear the items on top over and over again (because after they’re washed they go back on top) or you ruin the folding by rummaging through the rest of the stack. If you file fold, you can see all items when you look in the drawer. Then, you can make your decision without disturbing the rest of the items in the drawer.
One issue I ran into with this closet, the drawers are very shallow. Most of her items were able to be file folded – no problem. His items were not. So, I folded them in the same way I normally do, but instead of putting them into the drawer standing up, I laid them down so you can see all the items. This way, he is still able to choose what to wear without disturbing the rest of the items.
When organizing your shoes, if possible, make sure they are visible. This way, you don’t forget what you have. This shoe wall was so dreamy (and easy) to organize. It was the perfect size for all of her shoes (after decluttering) and she can see all of the shoes she has. When it is time to choose a pair, she can easily get them, wear them, and put them back where they belong! I like to organize by color – but organizing by type is another popular way to keep them organized.
I love having bins at the top of closets. There are items that are off season or you just don’t wear as much. If you keep them with everything else, I can just get cluttered. By placing these items in bins at the top of the closet, you can store them without having to get to them everyday.
For this closet that I organized at the beginning of Fall, I put her swimsuits in a bin since they wouldn’t be needed over the cooler months. There was also a bin with sentimental clothing items as well as family Christmas pajamas.
Labels are helpful so you know what is in each bin (I added the labels after I took all the pictures so you can’t see them here). That way, you know what bin you are grabbing and don’t have to waste time checking each bin.
The key to an organized closet is having a place for everything and making sure to put items back where they belong. The way a space stays organized is using it as intended.
The next tip is declutter periodically. If you just keep adding items, the closet will get cluttered again. I like to have a one in, one out system in my closet. If I buy a new item, I let another one go. This way, I am not filling my closet more and keeping items that I no longer use. This keeps my shopping in check and keeps my closet current.
