Personalized home organization
Entrepreneur, mom, & wife
When you move, you get a clean slate. A new space where bad habits have never been. You haven’t gone to bed with a dirty kitchen. You haven’t tried systems that don’t work. So, this is the best time to get organized!
Transitioning to a new environment can be stressful, coming into a new space with all your stuff. Plus more if you have kids and a spouse! You have to decide where everything goes and how best to organize it. And from my experience, once you place something, that’s where it tends to live, even if it’s not the most functional place.
Getting organized helps you gain a sense of control over a stressful situation. It is exciting. You get to decide where everything goes and you get to have control over a situation where sometimes there’s not much control (hi movers!).
This will also minimize chaos when you’re unpacking. If you pack in an organized fashion, know where everything goes, it will help with the unpacking. You don’t just have a bunch of boxes labeled “miscellaneous.” They are labeled by room and what is in them. This will help when you’re unpacking know what needs to be put away first!
When you move to a new home, take the time to think through your organizational systems. Look at the layout you have and the storage options you have available to you. Many times, when you move, you need new furniture to fit in the space. Think about how you can use that furniture to your advantage and create functional storage that looks nice in your home.
With a new space, you can tailor your organizational system from the beginning. You can decide the best way to use a space with (hopefully) minimal tweaks as you use it! This will optimize the functionality in each room and find the best way to use the space. You don’t want sports uniforms all the way upstairs for a four year old who needs to get to soccer practice! You want them downstairs so you can change and head out the door quickly!
My favorite reason for getting organized is streamlining routines. You need to have an organized environment for everyone to know what to do. In the morning, you want breakfast to be easy and your kids to know where all their items are. The last thing you want to do is search for a lunch box on Monday morning because you don’t know where it ended up!
When organizing a new space, it is important to make essential items easily accessible. We have our toothbrushes and hairbrushes downstairs for the kids. This makes it easier for them to get ready in the morning rather than having to run back upstairs (which would be a 1 minute activity or 10 minute activity, you never know!). This also saves time and energy, something parents are lacking on all fronts!
My first goal when I work in clients’ homes is to increase the comfort and tranquility in the home. We are constantly rushing around with so much to do. I want home to be a place that feels calm. Where everything has a place and everyone knows where it is. This helps everything run more smoothly whether it’s the morning or afternoon!
Have you ever had a friend say they are stopping by and you have to do a quick clean up? And you just end up tossing everything in a closet? That’s not what we want. We want systems in our homes so a friend can stop by and you don’t have to rush to clean up. Just wipe off the counters and call it a day. This makes your home more inviting to guests and the people who live in the home.
An organized environment supports your overall well being and mental health. When my home is clean and organized, so is my mind. And, this also translates to kids. Even if they can’t express what’s going on, kids thrive in structured environments and organization. Setting this up in a new home will help them have a better transition and a positive experience.
When you set the foundation for organization from the start, you can create the habits in your new home to support your organizational systems. This is why I always recommend decluttering before you move. All the items coming into your new home will be those that you love and use. Then, you find a functional spot for them and create mindful habits for maintaining the organization.
Then, you continue these habits, making sure to only bring items into the home that you love and need. Finding a place for them to live that is visually appealing and creates a calm environment in your home.
When you move into your new home, creating an organized environment leads to organization down the road. It helps with a smoother transition for you and your family.
When we help families move, we love to create a functional and harmonious living space that the whole family can maintain and enjoy. Moving soon? Reach out to see how we can help make that transition as smooth as possible for you and your family.
