I think The Home Edit is fantastic. From an organizing standpoint, they make Pinterest perfect pantries and offices. It’s how I would love my home to look if I had no children and an unlimited budget. From a business standpoint, they have done so much! In-home organizing can only take you so far, so I […]
The new school year is right around the corner. I love the start of the school year, as a former teacher, it feels more like a new year than January does. And now having kids, it definitely feels like the new year! This year, I have a kindergartener! And that means we’re getting into more […]
The Pareto principle states that for many outcomes, roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of causes. In terms of our homes, that means 80% of the time we use 20% of our items. That means, 80% of our homes are not used on a regular basis. Some of those items are used on occasion, […]
Whether you’re packing for just yourself or a whole family (I don’t know about you, but packing for everyone still falls on me!), you will want to be organized to make sure you don’t forget anything.
Before we even get started, my biggest piece of advice is to have duplicates for travel. The last thing you want is to forget your phone charger or worse, the sound machine (parents of young kids, you understand!).
When you’re creating a new routine or workflow, a checklist can help you remember what is next without wasting brain energy on the task. If you want to start a bedtime routine, writing down the routine in order will help you remember what comes next. I use checklists for my personal and business routines and workflows in my life.
Toy rotation just means having a limited number of toys for your children to play with at one time. This creates less overwhelm for kids. Have you ever had too many choices and just shut down? Our children feel the same way. When there are too many toys around, they get overwhelmed and can’t choose.
I get asked all the time what products do I use for which space. So, I have brought together my favorite Container Store products and which spaces I like to use them in. Of course, this is not an exhaustive list, but sometimes it’s easier to have fewer choices to help make product decisions! All the products are linked, just click the picture.
As women, we are busy. There is a lot going on that we have to manage, especially if you have kids! There is the house, schedules for everyone (you, kids, husband), likes and dislikes, etc. I know we are working towards equality in the household, but in our house, I am still in charge of all the things. When we go out of town, I like to say to my husband, “You pack for one person. I pack for four.” And let me say, I have had my husband pack for the boys and either I have to make a list or they forget something!
So with being so busy, there is a lot going on in our schedules and our brains. The best thing to do is get it on paper. I used to think I was really good at remembering things (and I am), but it frees up so much space in my brain when I know it’s on paper.
Each week and each day, I take the time to plan. Most of this is through the lens of a working mom with childcare, but I will talk about what I did as a stay at home mom. I learned most of this system when I started working full time, but I did use it when I was home full time with 1-2 kids.
Studies show that your productivity, health, mood, and even your sleep habits are deeply affected by your physical surroundings. But if you’re like me, you probably don’t need a study to tell you that more clutter = more stress.
Your home is your sanctuary. Let’s work together to restore it to a place you love to be in… and build habits that help you keep it that way.
